Personal profile

Hi, my name is Dana. I was born and brought up in Italy. My hometown Trieste is situated just on the border with Slovenia. Since I am bilingual, I have always enjoyed learning new languages.  I am convinced that the more languages you know, the more you are open to other people and new experiences.

My other hobbies include reading and travelling all over the world.

I come from an international school where I have studied together with 200 other people from 100 different countries. This experience taught me that learning a new language can be easy and really good fun.

If you are not convinced about that yet I am here to help you and make your studies of a foreign language really enjoyable!

Qualifications and teaching experience

I am a native speaker of Italian and Slovene.

After completing the International Baccalaureate programme in 2005 I have moved to the UK. I am now a second year student in Interpreting and Translating at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. My main languages are Spanish and French, lately I have started learning Russian as well.

During the summer I teach Italian students English. I usually help people who need extra classes.

Teaching approach

Having taught Italian students English and being a student myself I have developed an in depth understanding of the differences between the two languages.

I am a very patient teacher and I always tailor classes to the student's needs.  My choice of teaching materials depends on the student's interests and hobbies. Although I am convinced that grammar knowledge is essential to achieve a good language level, I usually do not follow a grammar book. The materials I use to teach grammar go from newspaper articles and audio files to songs. This way students improve their vocabulary and listening skills while having fun. This approach also stimulates students to put into practice their speaking skills.

I believe that a personalised approach to a language is essential. Only by doing something you enjoy you are motivated to improve!

Ciao, sono Dana. Sono nata e cresciuta in Italia. La mia città, Trieste, è situata sul confine con la Slovenia. Essendo bilingue mi è sempre piaciuto imparare lingue nuove. Personalmente penso che più lingue parli più sei disposto a conoscere gente nuova e fare nuove esperienze.

Oltre alle lingue mi piace molto leggere e viaggiare.

Prima di iscrivermi all'università nel Regno Unito frequentavo una scuola internazionale dove studiavo e vivevo con 200 ragazzi da 100 paesi diversi. Quest'esperienza mi ha insegnato che imparare lingue nuove può essere facile e divertente!

Qualifiche ed esperienza

Dopo aver ottenuto il Baccalaureato internazionale nel 2007 mi sono trasferita nel Regno Unito  dove frequento il secondo anno del corso di Laurea in Interpretariato e traduzione all'università Heriot-Watt ad Edimburgo. Studio spagnolo, francese e da poche settimane russo.

Durante le vacanze estive mi dedico all'insegnamento dell'inglese a studenti che hanno bisogno di lezioni extra.

Metodo d'insegnamento

Avendo insegnato inglese a studenti italiani ed essendo io stessa studentessa ho sviluppato una profonda conoscenza delle differenza tra le due lingue.

Sono un'insegnante paziente e comprensiva che sa adattare le lezioni ai bisogni degli studenti ed adeguarsi ai loro hobby ed interessi. Seppure penso che la grammatica sia una parte fondamentale nell'apprendimento di una lingua, non ne è certamente l'unico aspetto, perciò preferisco basare le mie lezioni su articoli di giornale, file audio e canzoni. Questo metodo permette agli studenti di arricchire il loro vocabolario, migliorare la capacità di ascoltare e, senza dubbio, li stimola ad esprimersi oralmente.

Infine sono convinta che un approcio personalizzato sia essenziale e faciliti l'apprendimento. Quanto più lo studio della lingua è piacevole, tanto più grande è la motivazione a migliorare.
