English

Personal profile

Hello, my name is Kathy. I am 29 years old, born in Lima, Peru but grew up and studied in the United States. I have done a fair share of travelling and am highly interested in learning about other cultures and getting to know people from all walks of life. I believe this experience helps students to obtain more knowledge not only about the English language but also truly understand the custom and practices of an English speaking country.

My interests include teaching, travelling, reading and music.

I am looking forward to being able to assist you with your studies and will do my best to help you achieve your goals.

Qualifications and teaching experience

Although I am Peruvian, my mother language is English. I studied translation and Interpretation and it is something that sparked my interest in teaching languages as well. In the United States I started out teaching immigrants when I was 18.

When I decided to live in Peru, which was 7 years ago, I started working as a translator and teaching English in IPP (Instituto Peruano de Publicidad) which focuses on English Advertising as well as the Traditional American and British English (grammar, essays, etc) ranging from Basic to Advanced levels. In addition, I have taught private classes to a large range of companies such as banks and corporate entities.

I have also assisted a number of ESL Seminars and Training Courses in the University of San Ignacio de Loyola and have a number of certifications.

Teaching approach

As an English teacher I am aware there is not one specific approach that works for all students given that each person is different and has diverse needs, so I focus a great deal on the initial evaluation that I give to my students along with a fun psychological exam that helps me see if a student is naturally a more visual person, a listener or needs to get involved in what he/she is learning (this makes studying and teaching a lot smoother and obviously more entertaining as well).

Some of the methods I use are:

  1. Non-verbal cues. Facial expressions, hand gestures, and other non-verbal cues are a great way to overcome the language barrier.
  2. Visual aids, which can be used to teach everything from vocabulary to prepositions.
  3. Grammar focus, vocabulary and conversation.
  4. Compositions, essays, literature, discussions, debates.
  5. Activities, credit work, written and oral quizzes.

I think that the great thing about learning English these days is that it can be tailor made for each student, specifically in the case of private classes. Try it out!
