Yeovil, Somerset welcomes German visitors

It seems that German is the language of the day in Yeovil, Somerset.

I was really interested to read in thisissomerset.co.uk about how a school in Yeovil went about finding out what it means to be British, and what it means to be German.

A group of visiting German students prepared a questionnaire listing their stereotypical views of British people which they gave to the Yeovil pupils to see which they thought were true.

These included "they love the Royal Family", "they hate Europe", "they can't cook" and "on holidays they show no sense of fashion".

The students also listed some views they thought other nationalities held about Germans, including "we drink too much beer" and "they think we're all Nazis".

With these kind of national stereotypes still apparently in the air, let’s hope that some of these pioneering Yeovil students will become qualified translators and interpreters and will be able to bridge the cultural divide with their multilingual communication skills.

We regularly carry out German interpreting and translation work in the Somerset area, so do please get in touch if we can help.
