Language of Sport Celebrated in Winchester, Hampshire
It has spawned countless quotes, phrases and clichés and now the language of sport is set to be celebrated in Winchester, Hampshire.
The English Project, which runs English Language Day, picked the subject to coincide with the looming 2012 London Olympics. You can get more info here... http://www.thisishampshire.net/archive/2011/10/04/News+-+Winchester/9284827.English_Language_Day_sports_Olympic_theme/
We wondered how many sporting phrases we could come up: throw in the towel, calling the shots, level playing field, a game of two halves, kick into touch...actually there are loads of phrases that have crept into common English usage. Since the idea has kick-started (there’s another sporting phrase!) in Winchester, Hampshire, the challenge is going out to all those French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic, Bengali, Punjabi, Romanian and Russian translators and interpreters in the Hampshire area – what sporting phrases/clichés exist in your language? Answers on a postcard...
Incidentally, the charity will also be asking people to vote for their favourite sports tweet at www.englishproject.org.
