Latest Community Interpreting Course

We’ve just completed another accredited Community Interpreting course in Worcester.  Out of the 18 Students who enrolled, 14 students passed and are now qualified as Community Interpreters.

They will be attending an award ceremony in Worcester next week.  The new interpreters on the block can cover Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Portuguese.  What a great result.

Our lead tutor on the course is the highly qualified and experienced interpreter, Ian McGarr.  Below he shares his thoughts on the art of community interpreting and how the course helps students learn the necessary skills.

"There is a common misconception that the ability to speak two languages is all that is needed to become an interpreter. The truth could hardly be more different. People who are bilingual or speak more than one language fluently are special, but even they have to start from the very beginning again in order to learn how to interpret between their languages. This course on Community Interpreting introduces students to a whole new range of skills: conversation management, effective note-taking skills, translation skills including sight translation, and the ethics of interpreting to name a few. The course is challenging and immensely rewarding. It is a real pleasure for me to tutor this course."
