Community Interpreting Course and Professional Interpreters
At a recent Community Interpreting course I attended, the tutor made rather a poignant comment. He said, “When interpreting within the public sector, it is often the case that non-English speaking individuals will only need the services of a professional interpreter if they find themselves in a traumatic situation or under other unhappy circumstances”. This really struck a chord with me as I considered the interpreting assignments I’d managed over the last couple of days.
We have just sent a Polish interpreter to assist at a hospital appointment in Bedford, a Russian interpreter to a police station in Luton, a French interpreter to a meeting with a solicitor in Reading and a BSL court interpreter to a court in London. I just hope the presence of our professional and qualified interpreters did something to make each event less stressful for all concerned.
